Selecting a fitness centre/gym

Contrary to what some may think, selecting a fitness centre calls for a lot of thought. What may be perfect for your friend may not necessarily be right for you. If all you are looking for is a place to lift weights, then any bare bones gym will do, but if you are truly looking to make an investment that will pay off in better health and a better quality of life, then you need to be very selective before shelling out your hard-earned cash.

Here are some things to consider when choosing a fitness centre:

Location and hours of operation

Nowadays there are gyms that open twenty four hours all year round. If you are someone on a tight schedule, this might be ideal. Also, a centre located close to your home or work is more accessible than one located miles away.


This should be obvious, but there are gyms that have the look and feel of a luxury spa and then there are some that will make you think twice before getting on the equipment. Not only should the workout area be clean and pleasing to look at, but the showers and closet areas as well. Together with cleanliness is the condition of the equipment. Rusty-looking equipment, frayed cords, electrical wires that cross pathways should all be a turn off.


Your fitness goals should determine the type of gym you select. Are you looking for cardio workouts, swimming, Yoga? Would you like a steam room or sauna? If the gym has these amenities you should be able to inspect them before signing up. Also, ask about time limits for the various equipment. Some gyms may restrict treadmill to twenty minutes which can be too short for most people. If classes are offered, ask what hours are available. If you have young children you may be interested in child-care services.


This is extremely important. Look at the attitude and professionalism of the staff. Are there certified trainers? Are they staff attentive, helpful, courteous?


Most gyms offer membership, which means you may be required to sign a contract for a year and pay something up front in addition to your monthly payments. Others may simply ask you to pay month to month. Be sure to read the fine print or ask before signing. Many people take out a gym membership, only to drop out before the year is through. Inquire whether there is a penalty for this.

Finally, before committing to a membership, you should ask for a trial workout. This will give you an idea of how crowded the gym is, what are the waiting times for using equipment, attitude of the staff as well as the patrons who go there.
